Return to the Little Kingdom: Steve Jobs and the Creation of Apple

4.3 out of 5 stars (106)

In 1984, The Little Kingdom: The Private Story of Apple Computer told the story of Apple's first decade alongside the histories of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Now, completely revised and expanded, Return to the Little Kingdom is the definitive biography of Apple and its founders from the very beginning. Moritz brings readers inside the childhood homes of Jobs and Wozniak and records how they dropped out of college and founded Apple in 1976. He follows the fortunes of the company through the mid-1980s, and in new material, tracks the development of Apple to the present and offers an insider?s profile of Jobs, whose genius made Apple the powerhouse it is today. Required reading for everyone who's ever listened to music on an iPod, Return to the Little Kingdom is timely and thorough, and the only book that explains how Steve Jobs founded the company that changed our world.

If you've been touched by Apple and are interested in their backstory, this is a great read.

As someone who has enjoyed Apple products since 1984, I've read just about all of the Apple (and Steve Jobs) related books.

This is one of the good ones: well written with great anecdotes. It's an enjoyable read.

I'm a huge fan of Apple, Steve Jobs, and have been fascinated by the company for years, so the appeal of this book was that it would provide some amazing insights into the evolution of the company, but unfortunately it was disappointing.

As mentioned the book itself is a revised version of Michael Moritz's highly acclaimed 1984 book "The Little Kingdom: The Private Story of Apple Computer", the original book was fantastic and based on the title and description, I could not wait to get Moritz's insights into the way Apple evolved from the early years, learning more on Apple after Steve Jobs left and how the company learned from those experiences to re-establish itself as the premier technology company I know and love. Unfortunately the book is really just a reprint of the original with an additional 20 page epilogue about the period from 1984-today. If you are looking to learn about today's Apple and how it re-established its brand you'll be extremely disappointed.

The book itself is insightful about the infancy of Apple Computer and provides interesting insights into the key players of its success in the early days. At times it jumps around between scenes past and present in a manner that is not necessarily fluid and a bit difficult to follow. It does a good job discussing how a company goes from a start-up in a garage to an industry leader, as well as how the sheer strength of Steve Jobs' personality helped push the company further than anyone ever imagined.

All in all the book was interesting, but having read a number of books on the beginnings of Apple Computer I was much more interested in the rebuilding years and how the company reinvented itself, which to me is a far more compelling and insightful story, and I was really disappointed.

Learnt a few things about the early days of Apple.

The Apple I wasn't much of a hit at the Homebrew Computer Club.

Steve Jobs wasn't behind every myth in the early days of Apple. The whole management team was probably more involved than Steve.

Lots of other little things. I definitely know more now than when I started this.

A deep look at Apple's early days from one of the best VCs of the last two decades when he was a journalist. If nothing else, every entrepreneur should read the updated introduction and afterword.

I have been following Michael Moritz's career and found out he was not only an intelligent investor but a really clever, sharp eye journalist. This book resembles a bit Wolfe's The Right Stuff and was written before Jobs deification. Just the introduction worths the money!

I find it very interesting and think it tells us a little about the characters we have read about elsewhere and seen. I liked hearing about the very early days and the forming of the business and could imagine it growing into a company all around them. Tells us how the founders,Jobs and Wozniak went through school to starting up in 1976. Through the 1980s and covers more of the first twenty five years and expands on that. it seems to say to the reader that this is the first biography of these people who have given us so much fun today.

It is difficult to fully appreciate just how different and awkward early computers were to use. Linking bits together, typing code or running tapes to get it started and then being confined to using a small selection of software.

When Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were trying to sell computer boards at the Homebrew Computer Club in the 1970's, it was to enthusiasts who did not mind tinkering. By the time the Macintosh arrived in 1984, Apple was a growing profitable company selling a complete package to industry and domestic users.

This book provides a detailed look at how it all came about. The successes, failures and personalities that created a company so different to IBM and Hewlett Packard.

I have been using Apple computers for nearly two decades. I have bought in to the aspirations that come with buying such a machine. I 'Think Different', but still do a lot of computing and enjoy the experience using a current iMac.

Once you have read Return to the Little Kingdom, I think you will appreciate why owners and users of Apple computers are so devoted and happy that they have made the right choice.

The four star rating is only because I would have preferred to see a few photographs includedReturn to the Little Kingdom: Steve Jobs, the creation of Apple, and how it changed the world
